Competition Logistics
When is the Competition?
TEAMS 2009 will take place between February 2 and March 15. As Host, you choose one or more date(s) from within this window that best fits your schedule and the students in your area. You may hold more than one competition and competitions may be conducted during the school week or on weekends.
How Much Time Does it Take to Prepare?
On average, you will need four to six months to plan a successful TEAMS competition. Most of your time will be dedicated to promoting the competition and inviting schools/groups to participate. Other time commitments will include coordinating with volunteers, securing the competition facility and fundraising (if necessary). JETS provides you with all competition day materials based on the number of teams registered to compete at your site.
Where is the Competition Held?
Most university hosts conduct the competition in a facility on campus. You may hold the competition in one large room or in several smaller rooms. The size of the facility you need depends on how many schools/groups and teams you expect to attend. Either way, each room must be equipped with at least one table and eight chairs, enough to accommodate each participating team. Coaches are not allowed in the competition rooms and you will need to provide them a separate area to wait during Parts 1 and 2 of the actual competition.
Inviting High Schools & Groups
A good goal is to invite at least 5-10 schools/groups resulting in 11-20 teams. A team consists of 4 to 8 students. Teams can participate from local high schoolspublic, private, home schoolsyouth groups and organizations (Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, Church groups, etc.). Invite as many different schools/groups as your facility and budget can accommodate.
How Much Does it Cost to Host?
JETS does not charge you anything to host! However, there are some general expenses you will be expected to include in a budget:
- Any facility costs you may incur.
- Marketing and promotional costs related to inviting schools/groups to participate.
- Breakfast, lunch and/or snacks for students and coaches on competition day.
- Any human resource time.
Other expenses incurred vary per Host and may include: additional awards (other than those provided by JETS), give-aways (hats, key chains, promotional items) and any special activities you may wish to incorporate. The average Host budgets $3,000 - $5,000.
You are welcome and encouraged to fundraise and seek local sponsorships to help offset competition costs! JETS has FREE promotional materials available for you to use.
How Do Teams Register?
All teams register online through JETS and registration opens in September. JETS provides each Host with a free online account that will let you easily manage the TEAMS competition and receive information on the schools/groups competing at your site.
