Parents
JETS helps parents help their kids make informed decisions about their futures.
Since 1950, JETS has been bringing parents, students, and educators together to introduce high school students to engineering through real-world examples and team-based challenges.
Why engineering?
Did you know that 4 out of the top 5 most lucrative degrees is in engineering? ... That engineering degrees make up nearly ½ of the top ten degrees in demand? ... That the most common degree for a top CEO is engineering? ... Or that engineers work in sports, music, design, dance, medicine, energy, the environment, and art?
It doesn't take a "rocket scientist" to see that engineering is one of the most creative and rewarding careers out there. Yet, it is also one of the most underestimated and misunderstood.
Find out how you can help your student explore ... assess ... and experience the possibilities of a career in engineering.
EXPLORE
Encourage your child to explore JETS' website, and do so yourself. Our Explore section provides a wealth of information about engineering as a major and a career, with interviews, career profiles, discipline synopses, and articles and links of interest.
ASSESS
Order a copy of ASSESS, JETS' signature assessment tool, for your high school student and begin discovering what facets of engineering might be best suited for your child's special talents and interests.
EXPERIENCE
Get your student — and yourself — involved in JETS' national engineering competitions, exclusively for high school students. TEAMS is our one day, two-part team-building challenge that brings together teams of 4-8 students to solve real world engineering problems. NEDC the National Engineering Design Challenge, asks teams to develop a prototype to help someone with disabilities enter into or advance in the world place. These hands-on, collaborative competitions give engineering a social context, build confidence and teamwork, and illustrate the span of an engineer's options and duties.
